Oh yeah, life was busy and very full.
One day while shooting for a local rock band my heart locked on a lead guitar player... he asked me to come hang out backstage at a gig before I took notice. A few shows later we were “official” and life has been full steam ahead ever since.
In 2013, I stepped away from photography, choosing to focus on our wedding and marriage. With the birth of our rainbow baby, Noah, in 2016, followed by the sale of the publishing company I worked for, I knew it was time to fully commit to combining everything I love: family, children, storytelling and photography.
I designed Photography by Kat to give moms... and dads... a documentary look at their family’s uniqueness. I strongly believe in the value of every family member being captured in an honest and candid way, no Snapchat filters here, and then having that artwork available for you to see everyday. Cuz ain’t no one got time to stare at a disc of images.
As a full-service photo studio I will help you pick out what everyone will wear for your session, assist you in figuring out where your gorgeous new pieces will hang and then guide you through selecting which images will become that artwork.
Your only job is to have fun being in photos with your family. Plus, family photography is ALL I do, no busy wedding season to compete with your memories; no side gigs. To keep this high level of detail oriented service, I only book up to 6 sessions a month.
Okay then! Lets get you on my calendar!
But, before taking Photography by Kat in this direction I was busily running around shooting weddings, engagements, portraits, chasing corporate work AND using my BA in Political Science to hold down a day job as a publisher and editor for a national trade magazine.
I’m Kathryn McGean, Photographer and owner of Photography by Kat, a Markham based documentary family photography studio. I noticed after having my son, Noah, that I was always the one taking the pictures or diving for my phone and found out other moms felt this way too! So I designed Photography by Kat to help moms get back in front of the camera with their families.
"[Family photography] lets children learn who they are and where they fit... When a child sees a family portrait with them included... they say to themselves... 'that's why I belong here. This is where I come from.'"
